Doctoral and Master Research Opportunities in Battery Materials
Materials Electrochemistry Laboratory welcomes highly motivated master’s degree (S2) and doctorate degree (S3) to join our research on materials, architectures for energy storage and other electrochemical-based applications. Current research direction includes Li-ion, Zn-ion and Na-ion batteries (from electrode synthesis to data representations approaches), electrocatalysis and other electrochemical devices and testing. Many projects in the lab are supported by competitive grants such as LPDP Inspirasi 2023 – 2028 and other national or international funding schemes.
For that reason, MEL-ITB is connected to various research-funded positions and scholarship schemes, and we actively help prospective students navigate the available options matching eligibility requirements, strengthening research proposals, and preparing a solid application strategy for graduate study at ITB. Faiq Haidar Hamid: From MELs to Ph.D. at MEET University of Münster
We are proud to highlight the remarkable achievements of Faiq Haidar Hamid, an exceptional alumnus from our Materials Science and Engineering group at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Faiq distinguished himself as the top graduate with the best publication in the October 2024 ITB graduation ceremony, recognized for his significant contributions to advanced battery research that supports industrial innovation in Indonesia.
During his bachelor’s and master’s studies, Faiq demonstrated outstanding research excellence. His work focused on next‑generation energy storage solutions, particularly in designing and studying high‑performance battery materials. His research has not only been published in prestigious scientific outlets but also contributed to international collaborative projects involving leading institutions in Asia and Europe.
Following his academic success, Faiq was accepted into a Ph.D. program at the University of Münster (MEET – Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology) in Germany, where he continues his doctoral research in cutting‑edge battery science. At MEET, he is part of a research group associated with some of the largest and most advanced battery research networks in Europe, working alongside world‑renowned experts in electrochemical energy technology.

Jotti Karunawan – Pioneering Nanotechnology Doctoral Research ITB
We are proud to highlight the remarkable achievements of Dr. Jotti Karunawan, who recently made history as the first graduate of the Ph.D. Program in Nano Science and Technology at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Jotti successfully defended his dissertation on “Modification of Structure and Surface of High‑Capacity Li‑rich Cathode Materials for Lithium‑Ion Battery Applications”, addressing the critical need for advanced battery technologies in electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions.
Dr. Jotti’s work earned him multiple publications in internationally recognized journals and cum laude distinction for his innovative research on lithium‑ion battery materials. His work has significantly contributed to enhancing the performance and stability of next‑generation energy storage systems.
In addition to his academic excellence, Dr. Jotti Karunawan has been appointed as a civil servant (PNS) at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), where he will continue to contribute his expertise in nanotechnology and energy storage. This position represents a significant step in his career, as he embarks on a mission to drive innovation and technological advancements in Indonesia.
His work, particularly in the field of battery materials, aligns with BRIN’s strategic goals in sustainable energy innovation and national development. As a newly appointed PNS, Dr. Jotti is poised to play a vital role in advancing Indonesia’s research agenda, furthering innovation in energy storage and other nanotechnology fields.
